SmartWay Tractors – in Both Sleeper and Day Cab Configurations

SmartWay tractors have been demonstrated to be the most fuel-efficient Class 8 models for long-haul and regional goods movement. SmartWay Tractors can be sleeper or day cab configurations. The required components of the SmartWay Designated Tractor are:

SmartWay Designated Tractor Sample
Component Specifications
Engine
  • Current model year engine certified to meet applicable U.S. EPA emission requirements appropriate for the model year tractor. See notes below.
  • Fully electric tractors (battery or fuel cell) certified to U.S. EPA GHG standards qualify for SmartWay designation.
Aerodynamics
  • Aerodynamically integrated high-roof fairing or cab compartment
  • Aerodynamic mirrors
  • Aerodynamic bumper
  • Tractor side extending fairings (also called tractor gap reducers)
  • Fuel tank fairings (also called chassis fairings)
Tires
  • SmartWay verified low-rolling resistance steer and drive tires
(duals or singles) (aluminum wheels optional)

Idle Reduction

Sleeper and day cabs must have automatic engine shut-off (AES) capability.

For sleeper cabs, manufacturer availability of at least one option providing eight hours or more of engine idle-free auxiliary power, heat, and/or air conditioning using:

  • Auxiliary power unit or generator set
  • Fuel operated heater
  • Battery air conditioning system
  • Thermal Storage System

For day cabs, manufacturers are encouraged to provide additional idle reduction options that meet regional-haul needs.

  • EPA does not endorse the products or services of commercial companies. Any reference to a specific commercial product or service by trade name, trademark, manufacturer, company, or otherwise does not constitute or imply the endorsement or recommendation of EPA.
  • Fuel savings estimates are based upon extensive research, fleets, and the input of industry and scientific associations.  However, your increase in freight efficiency will depend upon several factors including your operations and the fuel-efficiency of your starting vehicles.
  • All equipment must be maintained per manufacturer’s service recommendations and replaced when necessary.
  • For model year 2014 and newer tractors, the tractor must be certified to applicable EPA GHG standards. For model year 2020 and older tractors, the tractor’s engine must be certified to applicable U.S. EPA emission standards appropriate for the model year tractor.
