Greater Cincinnati Water Works Case Study

The following reports document the implementation of a surveillance and response system (SRS) at Greater Cincinnati Water Works and describe the evaluation of data that was collected from the SRS and its components. The first report describes the status of the SRS and its components following implementation. The remaining reports describe the evaluation of data that was collected from the SRS and its components during an extended period of operation.

    This component uses intrusion detection systems to detect security breaches at distribution system facilities that are vulnerable to contamination.

    This component monitors water quality complaint data to identify abnormally high volumes or spatial clustering of complaints that may be indicative of drinking water contamination.

    This component involves the analysis of public health data to identify disease or illness in the population that might be attributable to contaminated drinking water.

    This component is activated during water contamination response to help confirm or rule out possible water contamination through field and laboratory analyses of water samples.

    This component establishes procedures for responding to possible drinking water contamination incidents in order to minimize consequences to utilities and the public.
