About the Office of Applied Science and Environmental Solutions

What We Do

The Office of Applied Science and Environmental Solutions (OASES) drives a pivotal transformation in how scientific research is conducted and applied within the EPA. OASES prioritizes practical, solution-oriented projects that align directly with the immediate needs, goals, and requirements of EPA program and regional offices to respond effectively to emerging issues and regulatory needs. By focusing on solution-oriented projects and fostering interdisciplinary collaboration, OASES ensures that science is a powerful tool in advancing environmental protection and public health.

OASES houses:

  • Two science program management divisions:
    • The Children’s Health Protection Division, which works to reduce negative environmental impacts on children through involvement in EPA rulemaking, policy, enforcement actions, research, and applications of science that focus on prenatal and childhood vulnerabilities.
    • The Science Engagement Division, which supports the programs of the EPA’s Science Advisor, provides critical science management functions for OASES, and leads several science partnership and engagement programs for OASES and the EPA.
  • Three applied research divisions: Applied Science and Environmental Methods Division, Coastal Science Solutions Division, and the Environmental Solutions Division.

OASES collaborates across various EPA programs, ensuring a unified approach to environmental issues. This includes partnerships with external stakeholders, leveraging expertise from other organizations to enrich research and promote innovative solutions. By working closely with regulatory program offices, OASES will ensure that research efforts are directly connected to regulatory frameworks, thus supporting compliance and promoting environmental protection as informed by the latest scientific insights.
