EPA Data Registry

The EPA Data Registry is a resource for environmental system developers and enterprise architects. It also provides environmental program managers and users of environmental information with access to automated services to enable better understanding of environmental terminology and data used by the Agency.

The EPA Data Registry is made up of many data collections but the best to start with are the following:

Key Registries and Services

  • Code Set Services
    Deliver reusable, centrally managed code sets that applications can reference instead of maintaining local, inconsistent lists.
  • Enterprise Data Catalog
    Serves as a centralized inventory of data assets, documenting what data exists, where it comes from, how it is used, and who owns it.
  • Facility Registry Service
    Provides unique identifiers and core reference information for facilities, enabling cross‑program linkage and consolidated reporting.
  • Laws & Regulations Registry
    Maintains authoritative references to statutes, regulations, and regulatory citations, enabling systems to link data and activities directly to legal authorities.
    • Connect to the Laws and Regulations Services (LRS) (swagger documentation) web service which associates law and regulation data with keywords, NAICS codes, EPA programs and offices, and substance lists from the Substance Registry Service (SRS). Laws and regulation data has been extracted from the Code of Federal Regulations (CFR), published annually by the Government Publishing Office (GPO).
  • North American Industry Classification System
    NAICS standardizes industry classifications to support economic analysis, compliance tracking, and reporting across federal and state programs.
  • Source Classification Codes
    Identify and classify sources of emissions or activities, supporting environmental reporting, modeling, and analysis.
  • Substance Registry Services
    House in the Central Data Exchange, SRS supplies unique identifiers and standardized information for chemicals and substances, supporting environmental, regulatory, and scientific data integration. It includes multiple search options including by substance name, multiple entry search, PMN & Accession numbers, CAS numbers and includes an advanced search option. 
  • Terminology Services
    Provide standardized definitions, controlled vocabularies, acronyms, and code lists so that terms are used consistently across applications, websites, and programs. 
  • Tribal Names Registry
    Provides official, standardized names and identifiers for federally recognized Tribes to ensure accurate representation and respectful use across systems.
  • READ (Registry for Electronic Addresses and Descriptions)
    Stores authoritative electronic addresses, endpoints, and descriptive metadata to support system‑to‑system data exchange.
    • READ data is available as an Excel and a separate CSV spreadsheet dated Feb 2026 as an interim solution.
