Model Lead Dust Sampling Technician Initial Training Course

Cover of the 2026 Lead Dust Sampling Technician Training Course Instructor Manual

The Model Certified Lead Dust Sampling Technician Initial Training Course was developed by the U.S. EPA, in collaboration with the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), to train contractors how to conduct post-work dust-lead testing under EPA's Renovation, Repair, and Painting (RRP) Rule and clearance examinations under HUD's Lead Safe Housing Rule.  During the course, students will learn how to:

  • Conduct a visual inspection
  • Collect lead dust samples
  • Interpret results
  • Write a report
  • Explain the results to a client

The Model Certified Lead Dust Sampling Technician Initial Training Course was revised in 2026 to reflect regulatory changes to the dust-lead action levels (previously referred to as the dust-lead clearance levels) and dust-lead reportable levels (previously referred to as the dust-lead hazard standards) that became effective Jan. 12, 2026, and the updated definitions of target housing and abatement that became effective Jan. 13, 2025.
