Getting to Smart Growth: 100 Policies for Implementation

This guide,  Getting to Smart Growth: 100 Policies for Implementation (pdf) (2 MB) , describes concrete techniques for putting the 10 smart growth principles into practice. The policies and guidelines presented in this primer have proven successful in communities across the United States, ranging from formal legislative or regulatory efforts to informal approaches, plans, and programs.

Published in 2002 by the International City/County Management Association (ICMA) and the Smart Growth Network with EPA’s support, this publication includes photographs illustrating smart growth elements and a matrix to identify policies that support multiple principles.

It is available in a Spanish translation, Cómo Alcanzar el Desarrollo Inteligente: 100 Políticas Para Su Implementación.

Getting to Smart Growth II: 100 More Policies for Implementation

Getting to Smart Growth II: 100 More Policies for Implementation

ICMA and the Smart Growth Network, with EPA’s support, produced  Getting to Smart Growth, Volume II (pdf) (1.83 MB) . This guide, published in 2003, follows the format of the first volume with a new set of policies, examples, and case studies.

Getting to Smart Growth II gives states and communities policy options to fit local circumstances, visions, and values while highlighting steps to help the private sector encourage more livable communities. The guide includes photographs illustrating smart growth elements and a matrix to identify policies that support multiple principles.

It is available in a Spanish translation, Cómo Alcanzar el Desarrollo Inteligente, II: 100 Políticas Adicionales Para Su Implementación.
