EPA Pacific Northwest: Smart Sectors Program
Summary
In EPA's Region 10 (Pacific Northwest), the Smart Sectors Program is managed in the Office of the Regional Administrator. Sector leads engage with regional leadership across land, water, air, and chemical program offices, as well as with national program offices at EPA's headquarters.
Program leads for each sector:
- Serve as ombudsmen within Region 10 across program offices.
- Conduct educational site visits and host roundtables with regional EPA leadership.
- Analyze data and advise on forward-thinking options for environmental improvement.
- Maintain meaningful, open dialogue with regional and national trade association partners and their environmental committees.
- Develop regional reports, as needed, that profile the impact of each sector on the economy and the environment.
Region 10 Smart Sectors
Maritime
The coasts of Alaska, Oregon, and Washington comprise the largest coastline in the nation, with a varied and extensive history. Maritime and riverine work supports robust economic sectors, encompassing a wide variety of uses that support coastal and inland river communities, including tribal fishing communities, shipping ports, fisheries facilities, boatbuilding, ferries, tourism, recreation, and waterfront revitalization.
Seattle was selected as one of three locations for initial pilot projects to help improve environmental and public health outcomes for communities affected by ports and associated goods movement facilities. For more information, visit Seattle Capacity Building Pilot Project.

Forestry, Paper & Wood Products
On November 20-21, 2019, Region 10 launched a Smart Sectors Program focused on forestry, paper and wood products with site visits of area operations and through a roundtable in which senior leadership heard from representatives from across the region in order to better inform environmental protection programs.
