History of Superfund Redevelopment
For over 40 years, EPA’s Superfund program has been a cornerstone of the work that EPA performs for communities across the country. Helping people participate in the Superfund cleanup process and supporting community efforts to safely reuse sites are vital parts of the program’s mission to protect public health and the environment.
In 1999, EPA launched the Superfund Redevelopment Initiative with the goal of returning formerly contaminated lands to safe and productive reuse. Since then, EPA has supported efforts nationwide to safely reuse and redevelop Superfund sites as commercial, recreational, ecological and residential resources while ensuring the protection of human health and the environment. Today’s Superfund Redevelopment Program continues to build on the efforts of the Superfund Redevelopment Initiative, and is a vital part of EPA’s mission to advance excellence in public health and environmental protection.
