Cummins Settlement Nationwide Recall Program Overview

2024 Cummins Settlement Resources
  • 2024 Cummins Vehicle Emission Control Violations Settlement Overview
  • Frequently Asked Questions

On January 10, 2024, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the U.S. Department of Justice, along with the state of California, reached a settlement agreement with Cummins, Inc. for vehicle emission control violations under the Clean Air Act. The violations stem from Cummins configuring one or more emissions software features as defeat devices that reduce or deactivate the vehicle engines emission controls.

Under the settlement, Cummins will implement a recall program to remove all defeat devices and replace the vehicles' software. Prior to the settlement, Cummins tested vehicles with the new software and demonstrated to EPA and California that the repaired vehicles will meet the applicable emission standards.

The vehicles eligible for the recalls are model year 2013 through 2019 Ram 2500 and 3500 diesel vehicles certified by Cummins. Cummins equipped approximately 630,000 vehicles with illegal software (“defeat devices”) that reduce the effectiveness of the emission control system during normal driving conditions.

Recall Information for Owners and Lessees of Eligible Vehicles

Owners and lessees of vehicles that are eligible for one of the recalls have or will soon receive information about the recall from Ram. The recall is a software update that will be installed by Ram dealers. To see if your vehicle is eligible, visit the Mopar Recall Information web page and look up recall information using your vehicle’s VIN number.

Cummins will provide an extended warranty to vehicles that receive the recall software, vehicles that have already received the recall software, and model year 2019 vehicles that were originally sold with the recall software. The extended warranty will cover the parts and systems affected by the recall; the list of covered parts and systems varies by model year.

The recall program to replace the software will be available indefinitely.

Ram 2500 and 3500 diesel vehicles sold in Canada

Ram 2500 and 3500 diesel vehicles with the Cummins engines containing defeat devices were also sold in Canada. Any of these vehicles that were originally sold in Canada but have since been imported to the United States and are currently registered here will be eligible to receive the software update.

For any questions regarding the vehicles sold in Canada or the Canadian regulatory program please contact Environment and Climate Change Canada at enviroinfo@ec.gc.ca or by telephone toll free at 1-800-668-6767.
