Archive of Hazardous Waste Pharmaceuticals Wiki

The Hazardous Waste Pharmaceuticals Wikispaces website was an informational website sponsored by EPA with the goal of facilitating collaboration among healthcare professionals and stakeholders in determining whether specific pharmaceuticals meet the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA) definition of hazardous waste when discarded.

The content of the website was generated by registered users to help disseminate item-specific information, as well as share any state-specific regulations that may aide others in making accurate hazardous waste determinations.

The Wikispaces service that hosted the website was permanently closed in September 2018; however, before the website was shut down, EPA downloaded and preserved the relevant information in the document below.

Please note that, effective August 21, 2019, Food and Drug Administration (FDA)-approved over-the-counter nicotine replacement therapies (i.e., nicotine patches, gums, and lozenges) are no longer included in the P075 listing for nicotine and are no longer considered hazardous waste at the federal level. The amendment to the P075 listing was finalized in the the final rule, Management Standards for Hazardous Waste Pharmaceuticals and Amendment to the P075 Listing, on February 22, 2019 (Volume 84 of the Federal Register starting on page 5816). Authorized states are not required to adopt the nicotine amendment, so please check with your state environmental agency to determine if FDA-approved over-the-counter nicotine replacement therapies continue to be considered acute hazardous waste in your state.
