Selected Application Summary

The selected application will support the Lac Vieux Desert Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians in decarbonizing and electrifying 145 Tribal housing units and two Tribal businesses. The residential and commercial Tribal buildings will receive comprehensive energy assessments to determine the scope of remediation and renovations required, including an evaluation of mold, asbestos, mildew, lead, and air quality. Energy efficiency upgrades will include reducing air leaks, replacing windows and vents, installing heat pumps and solar panels, upgrading electrical appliances, implementing water conservation measures, and applying exterior controls such as green infrastructure, shade trees, and bioswales. The project activities will benefit the health and quality of life for Tribal members and improve energy efficiency in the community.

Key Things to Know

Based on information provided by the applicant, the selected project will deliver the following benefits to reduce GHGs and support communities 1: 

  • Conduct comprehensive energy assessments on Tribal homes and businesses to identify remediation and renovation measures that will improve air quality, increase use of renewable energy, achieve cost savings, and enhance quality of life.
  • Upgrade 145 Tribal residences and two Tribal commercial buildings with energy efficiency, electrification, and solar installations.
  • Install 1.2 megawatts in residential and commercial solar arrays to offset between 60% to 70% of the energy used in each home and 50% to 60% of the energy used in the commercial buildings.

EPA will award grants to selected applicants once they meet all legal and administrative requirements. As of August 2024, grants are expected to be awarded by the end of 2024.
