Reduced Emissions in Construction Materials

  • Embodied carbon refers to the greenhouse gas emissions associated with the production (the extraction, transport and manufacturing) stages of a product’s life. EPA worked with federal agencies and industry stakeholders on a more consistent approach for reporting greenhouse gas emissions. See below for useful tools and resources.

Tools and Resources

  • EPA Best Practices for Reducing, Reusing, and Recycling Construction and Demolition Materials: A webpage with guidance on the use of salvaged and reused construction materials.

  • EPD Basics: A Manufacturer’s Guide to How and Why to Develop an EPD (pdf) This EPA publication provides an overview of EPDs and their importance to embodied carbon of construction materials.

  • GSA Facilities Standard P100: An overview of the General Services Administration‘s standard establishing mandatory design and construction

  • Tools for Measuring Embodied Carbon: From the Carbon Leadership Forum, a webpage with an overview of available tools for architects, engineers, and consultants to evaluate the environmental impacts of buildings and building materials using life cycle assessment.

  • DOT-FHWA LCA Pave: A tool developed by DOT’s FHWA that can be used to assess environmental impacts of pavement material and design decisions.

  • Map of Manufacturers with EPDs: An interactive map with locations of manufacturing plants that provide EPDs, color-coded by product category, and links to the EC3 tool to view EPDs and plug them into a whole-building embodied carbon model.

  • ACLCA PCR repository: An online index of PCRs, searchable by keyword, geography, standard conformance, and status, with option to view PDF of individual PCRs.

  • Federal LCA Commons: A collection of data repositories for use in life cycle assessment to advance Federal LCA data, research, and information systems; improve consistency in LCA methods; and enhance public and agency access to Federal LCA data in a standardized searchable format.
