Selected Application Summary
The selected application will support Project M.O.V.E. (Making Our Villages Energy-Efficient), a high-impact initiative that represents a strategic endeavor to dramatically reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by modernizing lighting systems, instituting key policy changes, and fostering workforce development. The selected application will enhance energy efficiency and reduce GHG emissions across the residential, small business, and government sectors in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands (CNMI) by replacing incandescent bulbs and fluorescent lighting with energy-saving light-emitting diode (LED) lighting. By transitioning to energy-efficient LED bulbs, the project will help CNMI reduce the use of fossil fuels, particularly diesel, that power most of the islands’ electricity generation.
Key Things to Know
Based on information provided by the applicant, the selected project will deliver the following benefits to reduce GHGs and support communities 1:
- Replace 120,000 75-watt incandescent light bulbs with 11-watt LED bulbs and 30,000 4-foot fluorescent lamps with 4-foot LED lamps in 12,000 residences, 300 government offices and buildings, and 1,000 small business locations.
- Save 16,819,200 kilowatt-hours/year with LED bulbs and 1,445,400 kilowatt-hours/year with LED fluorescent lamps.
- Reduce electricity consumption by approximately 40% at each retrofitted building.
- Deliver energy-efficient technologies to low-income and disadvantaged communities.
- Offer workforce training to build skills in cutting-edge green technologies, energy auditing, and sustainable practices.
- Provide a scalable model that can be used by other U.S. territories, islands, and regions facing similar challenges.

EPA will award grants to selected applicants once they meet all legal and administrative requirements. As of August 2024, grants are expected to be awarded by the end of 2024.
