Superfund Site Redevelopment How-to Guides and Technical Reports
General Guides and Reports
Getting Started with Superfund Redevelopment
This tool highlights key issues and considerations to think about while planning and moving forward with Superfund Redevelopment.
Superfund Redevelopment Policies and Guidance Documents
EPA’s policy and guidance tools can help stakeholders understand the Superfund program and resources available to support the return of sites to beneficial use.
The Revitalization Handbook: Addressing Liability Concerns at Contaminated Properties
This handbook discusses potential liability concerns associated with the cleanup and reuse of Superfund sites and shares tools to address those concerns.
Reuse Opportunities at Capped Superfund Sites (pdf) (5 MB)
This report discusses leading examples of capped-area reuses across the country, highlighting key factors and considerations that make these uses possible.
Revitalization-Ready Guide
This guide provides information for local and county governments, Tribes, quasi-governmental organizations and non-governmental organizations interested in facilitating the cleanup and reuse of brownfield properties. It provides a step-by-step process for identifying reuse possibilities for contaminated sites.
Guides and Reports for Specific Reuse Types
Commercial Use Where Waste is Left on Site (pdf) (2 MB)
This document provides technical information on how sites with hazardous waste have been safely reused for commercial purposes, while ensuring that the cleanups continue to protect people’s health and the environment.
Agricultural Land Uses at Superfund Sites: Planting a Sustainable Future (pdf) (4 MB)
This report discusses the safe and appropriate reuse of Superfund sites for a variety of agricultural uses.
How to Develop Sites for Renewable Energy
The path to renewable energy redevelopment on contaminated sites is generally split into three phases: pre-screening, site conditions and feasibility, and design and development. This page provides a clear path for redevelopment and key considerations but does not include information on the steps after Design and Development, including construction, operations, and decommissioning of a renewable energy project. Many sites do not require cleanup after initial investigation and are ready for reuse. Where additional cleanup is necessary, EPA and its state and Tribal partners work to address contamination to ready sites for reuse.
Energy Production at Superfund Sites
Superfund sites can be well suited for energy production. This page provides information about how EPA's Superfund Redevelopment Program supports parties as they work to reuse contaminated lands for a wide range of purposes, including many types of energy production and storage.
Ecological Revitalization: Turning Contaminated Properties into Community Assets (pdf) (9 MB)
This document discusses resources to evaluate and build soil, improve habitat for plants and animals, and create recreational assets for communities.
Reusing Cleaned Up Superfund Sites: Golf Facilities Where Waste is Left on Site (pdf) (2 MB)
This report provides technical information useful in planning, designing and building golf facilities at sites where cleanup plans call for on-site containment of contaminated material.
Recreational Reuse of Land Above Hazardous Waste Containment Areas (pdf) (2 MB) and Appendices (pdf) (500 KB)
This document provides technical information on how sites with hazardous waste have been safely reused for recreational purposes, while ensuring that the cleanups continue to protect people’s health and the environment.
Pilot Framework for Integrating Community Health and Wellness into the Superfund Reuse Assessment Process (pdf) (14 MB)
This report summarizes a pilot framework for integrating health, prevention and wellness considerations during the Superfund reuse assessment process, and for facilitating identification of possible reasonably anticipated future land uses.
