Super Emitter
EPA Webinar: Oil and Natural Gas Super Emitter Program
Date: June 25, 2024
Time: 1 – 3 p.m. Eastern Daylight Time
As part of its final rule to reduce methane emissions from oil and natural gas operations, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has developed a Methane Super Emitter Program to leverage third-party expertise to find large leaks and releases, known as “super emitters."
This webinar will focus on the use of advanced methane detection technologies (satellite, aerial, and mobile monitoring) to find super-emitter events. It also will cover the process for applying to have detection technology approved for use under the program and the process for becoming certified to submit information. In addition, the webinar will discuss how third parties will provide super-emitter information to EPA and how the Agency will process and review the data prior to notifying owners or operators of a potential super emitter event.
The webinar is open to the public. EPA particularly encourages those interested in submitting applications as technology providers and/or third-party notifiers to attend, along with representatives of state, Tribal, and local air agencies.
EPA announced its Final Rule for Oil and Natural Gas Operations on December 2, 2023. This regulation, which will sharply reduce emissions of methane and other harmful air pollution from oil and natural gas operations, includes the methane Super-Emitter Program. Under the methane Super Emitter Program, third parties may apply to EPA to become certified to send data about large methane “events” to the Agency. The rule establishes requirements for the technology that can be used for methane detection, for owners and operators responsible for reported leaks to investigate, for reporting the results of the investigation back to EPA, and for the Agency to make the notifications public on its website.
This webpage will be updated in mid 2024 to provide additional information about the methane super-emitter program. The page will be used to communicate information about how to report and will link to notifications received.
