What are the Computer Hardware and Software Requirements for Installing and Running MOVES?

See More Frequent Questions about MOVES and Related Models.

MOVES is designed to run on a single personal computer with a Windows 10 or 11 operating system.

The recommended minimum hardware for a desktop or laptop computer running MOVES are:

  • 64-bit CPU with 4 or more cores: Intel i7 or AMD Ryzen 5,
  • One solid-state drive with 512 GB. This allows for Windows, and other user applications along with 100GB for MOVES, MariaDB and temporary and final database storage,
  • 16 or 32 GB RAM.

MOVES is not CPU or memory intensive; it is I/O intensive. Faster SSDs and NVMe (Non-Volatile Memory Express) are well-suited for MOVES runs.

Even with a fast computer, large runs that cover many source types and pollutant process combinations will require many hours. See Tips for Faster MOVES Runs for more information on how to improve MOVES run time.

Mention of commercial products is for example only and does not imply EPA endorsement.
