Voluntary, Educational, and Outreach Programs Related to Ozone Layer Protection

In addition to its regulatory programs for protecting the ozone layer, EPA has developed educational and outreach programs to inform the public about health concerns related to ozone layer depletion. EPA also works with industry groups and others through voluntary programs to protect the ozone layer.

In 2020, Congress passed the American Innovation and Manufacturing (AIM) Act, authorizing EPA to address hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), primarily by phasing down the production and consumption of listed HFCs, managing HFCs and their substitutes, and facilitating the transition to next-generation technologies through sector-based restrictions on HFCs.
