ATTAINS- The Assessment, Total Maximum Daily Load (TMDL) Tracking and Implementation System (ATTAINS) is an online system for accessing information about the conditions in the Nation’s surface waters.  This information reported to EPA by states is available in ATTAINS. The public information is made available via ATTAINS web services, geospatial services, as well as through other EPA tools such as How's My Waterway.  Registered users may access the ATTAINS User Interface here.  If the hyperlink does not work, please copy and paste https://attains.epa.gov/attains/login directly into your browser. If you do not have an account, the How to Register for ATTAINS Fact Sheet explains the steps needed to obtain a User ID and get setup in the system.

Escaped Trash Assessment Protocol (ETAP) will soon be incorporated into the existing Marine Debris Tracker app.

Federal Plan to Address Microfiber (pdf) (1.38 MB)  EPA, in partnership with NOAA’s Marine Debris Program, is leading the development of a Report on Microfiber Pollution pursuant to Section 132 of the Save Our Seas 2.0 Act of 2020. The Report will be submitted to Congress and will include a five-year federal plan to reduce microfiber pollution. This poster gives a brief description of the microfibers problem, describes the process and timeline to develop the Report, and describes the goals for the federal plan and next steps.

How's My Waterway- How's My Waterway was designed to provide the public with information about the condition of their local waters based on data that states, federal, tribal, local agencies and others have provided to EPA. Water quality information is displayed on three scales in How’s My Waterway; community, state and national.  Visit the tool here.

National Aquatic Resource Surveys (NARS)- The National Aquatic Resource Surveys (NARS) are collaborative programs between EPA, states, and tribes designed to assess the quality of the nation's coastal waters, lakes and reservoirs, rivers and streams, and wetlands using a statistical survey design. The NARS provide critical, groundbreaking, and nationally-consistent data on the nation's waters.

Nonpoint Source Interactive Guide- This interactive guide offers a high-level overview of the Nonpoint Source monitoring guidebook Monitoring and Evaluating Nonpoint Source Watershed Projects.

Nonpoint Source Success Stories Map- This page features stories about primarily nonpoint source pollution-impaired waterbodies where restoration efforts have led to documented water quality improvements.

Nonpoint Source Watershed Projects Data Explorer- The Data Explorer is a useful tool for interested community members, local watershed partner and other non-governmental stakeholders to understand the work being done in their watersheds to restore and protect water quality.

Tools for Automated Data Analysis (TADA)- TADA encompasses an R package and series of R Shiny applications currently under development – new features are added every month. These tools are designed to help Tribes, Tribal Nations, Pueblos, States and other stakeholders more efficiently compile and evaluate Water Quality Portal (WQP) data collected from surface water monitoring sites.

WATERS GeoViewer- The WATERS GeoViewer tool is an EPA GeoPlatform based web mapping application that provides access to:

  • spatial data sets stored in WATERS, such as NHDPlus, EPA and Non-EPA Linked Data.
  • Watershed level reports containing both NHDPlus and StreamCat information.
  • Linked Data information, along with hyperlinks to web reports containing additional attribute information.
  • interactive Upstream / Downstream Search capabilities supporting Linked Data discovery.
  • interactive Watershed Delineation.
  • underlying EPA GeoPlatform items that can be used to create other mapping applications.

To visit the tool, please visit here.

Water Toxicity Sensor Challenge - Phase 2- For this Challenge, solvers are being asked to develop a prototype sensor and demonstrate its ability to detect a response to toxicity due to the presence of one or more contaminants at concentrations relevant to human health effects.  The prototype sensor should detect toxicity faster and cheaper than current methods.  Solvers are invited to submit written solutions to be reviewed and evaluated. Submissions that meet the requirements will be required to conduct third-party testing to be selected as a winner.

Water Quality Exchange and Water Quality Portal- The Water Quality Exchange (WQX) is the mechanism for data partners to submit water monitoring data to EPA.  The Water Quality Portal (WQP) is the mechanism for anyone, including the public, to retrieve water monitoring data from EPA's WQX, USGS' National Water Information System (NWIS) and USDA's ARA Sustaining the Earth's Watersheds, Agricultural Research Data System (STEWARDS).  The WQP is the premier source of water quality monitoring data in the United States and currently holds over 420 million water quality sample results from over 1000 federal, state, tribal and other partners.  It is the nation's largest source of single point of access for water quality data.

For youth and educators: To celebrate the 2023 Earth Day (April 22) and Water Week (April 23 – 29) observances, the Interagency Working Group on Youth Programs (IWGYP) and Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) are partnering on a digital contest with the goal of raising awareness of water use and water careers among young people ages 13-24.
