CPRG Selected Applications by Sector - Waste and Materials Management

The waste and materials management sector includes greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions from significant sources such as landfills and wastewater treatment facilities. In addition to emissions (including methane) from management of waste, the production, transportation and consumption of consumer products also results in emissions (e.g., from fuel use for transport, electricity, etc.).

  • In 2022, the waste sector contributed 2.6% of total U.S. GHG emissions.
  • Landfills are the third largest contributor (17%) of methane emissions.
  • Fifty-eight percent of the methane emissions released from municipal solid waste landfills are from food waste.

The following selected applications include proposed projects in the waste and materials management sector:

General Competition Selections

  • Colorado Energy Office
  • Hudson Valley Regional Council (New York)
  • King County (Washington)
  • Minnesota Pollution Control Agency
  • Oregon Department of Environmental Quality
  • Virginia Department of Environmental Quality

Tribes and Territories Competition Selections

  • Central Council of the Tlingit and Haida Indian Tribes of Alaska
  • Mississippi Band of Choctaw Indians
  • Nottawaseppi Huron Band of Potawatomi
  • Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community
  • Spirit Lake Tribe
Shows where GHG emissions come from in this sector, ways for governments to reduce them and the benefits to the public.

About CPRG

Authorized under the Inflation Reduction Act, EPA’s Climate Pollution Reduction Grants program provides nearly $5 billion in grants for states, local governments, Tribes, and territories to develop and implement ambitious plans to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and other harmful air pollution and benefit low income and disadvantaged communities.
