Natural Gas STAR Partner Since (1993 - 2022)| Methane Challenge Partner (2016 - 2024)

Kinder Morgan is a member of the ONE Future Coalition and has joined the Methane Challenge program as a ONE Future commitment option Partner. As a member of Methane Challenge, Kinder Morgan will report detailed data on methane emissions and voluntary methane reductions across its operations to Methane Challenge annually and the dataset will be available on this page.

As a ONE Future commitment option Partner, Kinder Morgan has committed to achieve a certain ONE Future emission intensity rate by 2025. Progress towards achieving this commitment will also be published on this page. Note that the ONE Future emissions intensity metric is defined by the ONE Future coalition in its emissions intensity protocol and was not developed or verified by EPA. All emission intensity values displayed on this page were calculated by the ONE Future coalition, using the coalition's methodologies. Please visit the ONE Future Coalition's website for more information on the emission intensity targets and calculation methodologies.

At the bottom of this page, you will also find the voluntary methane reductions that Kinder Morgan has achieved in the program.

Since joining the Methane Challenge program, Kinder Morgan has achieved the following methane emissions reductions, which are also expressed in terms of carbon dioxide equivalents and the value of the amount of natural gas saved:

  • Methane emissions reductions: 404,084 metric tons
  • Reductions in carbon dioxide equivalents: 11,314,338 metric tons
  • Natural gas savings: $147,322,112*

*Natural gas savings assumes a natural gas price of $7.00 per thousand cubic feet, based on the average of daily Henry Hub Natural Gas Spot Prices in 2022, rounded to the nearest dollar

*ONE Future Commitment Option Data Review Process

For 2017 - 2021 data, EPA conducted a basic review of the data elements related to voluntary emissions reductions. In subsequent years, EPA plans to expand data review to include other data elements.

In future data reporting cycles, Partners may update and resubmit data that was previously submitted, as needed. Resubmitted data will be included in the next program data publication.

About the Methane Challenge Program

The Methane Challenge Program provides a new mechanism through which U.S. oil and gas companies can make more specific and transparent commitments to reducing methane emissions. Partner companies choose between two commitment options to cost-effectively reduce methane emissions. Best Management Practice (BMP) Commitment
The BMP Commitment is intended to spur near-term, widespread implementation of methane mitigation activities across the oil and natural gas value chain to address methane emissions from key emitting sources. By committing to address an emission source, the partner is committing to implement a BMP on all such sources in their operations. Progress towards a commitment is generally indicated by the percent of sources to which the partner has implemented a BMP as part of the Methane Challenge. Commitments for a few sources are instead based on achieving a target rate (of equipment replacement or methane emission reductions).

ONE Future Emissions Intensity Commitment
The ONE Future Commitment is intended to drive action to achieve segment-specific intensity targets, established through the ONE Future Partnership, which will represent emissions per volume produced or volume of throughput and add up to a 1% or less “leakage rate” along the natural gas value chain by 2025.
