The boxplot below presents summary distribution data on the minimum, first quartile, median, third quartile, and maximum values for both the percentages and national percentile values of the key demographics.

The remaining graphs present data in a series of three graphs for each key demographic:

  1. Distribution of percentiles: The first graph presents the national percentiles of each of these demographics equally divided into ten increments. The number of communities in each of the increments is shown by a line with the axis on the right and the percentages of the power plant communities that fall into each of the increments are shown by the bars with the axis on the left.
  2. Comparison to National Averages: The second graph displays how communities near power plants compare to the rest of the nation by showing the percentage of power plant communities that have demographic averages greater than and less than the national average, as well as the generation and emissions of SO2, NOX, and CO2 from those power plants.
  3. Number above 80th percentile: The third graph displays the number of power plants in or near communities where one or more demographics are at least 80th percentile nationally for each state.

Low-Income

The percent in households where the household income is less than or equal to twice the federal "poverty level."

People of Color

The percent of individuals who list their racial status as a race other than white alone and/or list their ethnicity as Hispanic or Latino. That is, all people other than non-Hispanic white-alone individuals. The word "alone" in this case indicates that the person is of a single race, not multiracial.
