Detailed Project Information
Description: DWD and the Duke ELPC are developing policies and supporting materials for the city and county of Durham, NC to use to reduce waste at the source and improve water quality and the quality of life for residents. These groups are coordinating with other organizations across the state to support adoption of similar policies, ideally leading to state action for waste reduction and association reduction of debris in freshwater and marine ecosystems.

Current Project Outcomes: Policy Toolkit; white paper on the costs of SUPs to the community; proposed ordinance; national map of bag policies; local map with litter index; regional map with SUP policies
Long-Term Project Outcomes: Waste reduction and associated reductions of street litter in Durham, NC, with associated reductions in debris in freshwater and marine systems; develop resources for other communities across the state to enact and implement waste reduction policies.
