Detailed Project Information
Description: The Plastic Free Key West is a voluntary program encouraging local businesses to reduce their sale/distribution of single-use plastics. This is a tiered system where businesses are awarded a tier level based on their either total or partial elimination of single-use plastics. The tiers come with different marketing perks to provide incentives for businesses to eliminate all single-use plastics. We hope that by removing single-use plastic options at our local businesses, we will reduce the overall waste output for Key West.
Project Partners: We would like to recognize the program we are based on, Plastic Free 305. Plastic Free 305 is the initial plastic-free program with this voluntary tier system. We would like to recognize Key West City Commissioner Kaufman for acting as a driving force for this project. We would also like to recognize our Executive Director, Mill McCleary, who was also a driving force behind this project's implementation.
Current Project Outcomes: While Plastic Free Key West is still in the early stages, the program it was based on, Plastic Free 305, has over sixty participants with an ever-growing list as more companies switch to plastic free alternatives.
Long-Term Project Outcomes: The long-term goal of this project is to reduce the amount of plastic accumulating in our seas by encouraging businesses to use and distribute less plastic. We hope to prevent more plastic from ending up in our oceans by reducing sources of plastic. We hope this program can grow throughout the Keys.
