Detailed Project Information

Description: Spoil Island Project: Adopt-A-Spoil Island program brings together public and private community groups to remove litter and encourage stewardship of our public lands and waters. Local businesses, families, clubs, organizations, and individuals are able to "adopt" a spoil island in the Indian River Lagoon. Island adopters conduct at least 4 litter cleanups per year, install and maintain recreational amenities, and conduct habitat enhancement projects on the adopted island.

Project Partners: Friends of the Spoil Islands (citizen support organization)

Current Project Outcomes: 25 current island adopters, 28 adopted islands.

Long-Term Project Outcomes: Encourage and implement community stewardship of spoil islands, focusing on island and waterway cleanups.
