Many federal and NGOs maintain resources on water reuse, including those listed.  We understand this list is not exhaustive, and it represents those we have begun partnering with on the National Water Reuse Action Plan.  Please use the contact form to update the information or for us to consider adding your agency or organizations water reuse resources.

U.S. Geological Survey (USGS)

• USGS has compiled a brief summary of the principles and potential applications of water reuse as a part of their Water Science School.

• The WateReuse Association has prepared educational materials to help readers understand the basics of water reuse, including various treatment processes, testimonials from experts, and a glossary of technical terms.

Ground Water Protection Council

• The Ground Water Protection Council has prepared an overview of information relating to aquifer storage and recovery, a practice that stores water such as treated municipal wastewater or stormwater in an underground aquifer for later recovery.

Public Health and Technical Guidance

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)

• USDA Food Safety and Inspection Service has prepared guidance regarding water reuse in food processing contexts.

World Health Organization

• The World Health Organization has prepared guidance for how to safely reuse municipal wastewater for potable drinking water.  The document is specifically aimed at water suppliers and regulators.

Research

U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA)

• USDA Agricultural Research Service has conducted water management and conservation research to help evaluate, understand, and provide guidance on the use of reused water for crop irrigation.

U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)

• DOE has launched the Water Security Grand Challenge as a framework to advance technologies and innovation that increase the safety, security, and affordability of water. Various portions of the challenge support water reuse technology and constitute part of the Water Reuse Action Plan Action 4.3.

• DOE has built an interactive map of water reuse installations that treat wastewater and reuse it for non-potable uses. The map consists of projects for six Sun Belt states and was last updated in 2012.

The National Academies of Sciences Engineering and Medicine

• The National Academies has published a comprehensive 2012 report that examines the opportunities for using treated municipal wastewater for various reuse applications, and thereby reducing stress on certain water supplies.
