Overview of EPA’s WIFIA Program
The WIFIA program was established in 2014. Its mission is to accelerate investment in our nation’s water and wastewater infrastructure by providing long-term, low cost loans with customized terms to creditworthy borrowers for water and wastewater projects of national and regional significance.

The WIFIA program has very broad eligibilities with the ability to lend to any creditworthy public or private entity for a wide array of water infrastructure capital improvement projects. The program can fund wastewater and drinking water pipes and plants, green infrastructure projects, non-point source pollution abatement, stormwater management, decentralized wastewater treatment, desalination, drought prevention and mitigation projects, and water recycling projects.
