Great Lakes Monitoring
During the spring and summer, EPA's research vessel, the Lake Guardian, is used to help scientists sample water, aquatic life, sediments and air. Data gathered shows trends in water quality and aquatic life. Researchers are then able to determine the overall health of the Great Lakes ecosystem.

New Method for Rapid Assessment of Quagga and Zebra Mussel Populations
EPA’s Great Lakes Biology Monitoring Program, Office of Research and Development-Great Lakes Toxicology and Ecology Division, and The Great Lakes Center of Buffalo State College, collaborated through the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative (GLRI) to develop a new method for rapid assessment of dreissenid (zebra and quagga) mussel populations in lakes.
