Map of Hazardous Waste Cleanup Progress

New Name, Same Mission

In October 2024, EPA changed the name of its “Resource Conservation and Recovery Act Corrective Action Program” to the “Hazardous Waste Cleanup Program.” This rebranding is intended to increase broad understanding of the purpose of the program.

The Hazardous Waste Cleanup Program requires facilities that treat, store or dispose of hazardous wastes to investigate and clean up contaminated soil, groundwater, air, and surface water. This map below illustrates cleanup progress over time at these facilities across the country using four measures, with 3,961 Hazardous Waste Cleanup Program Progress Track facilities represented. Each map tab shows progress for one of four Hazardous Waste Cleanup Program measures. The measures are:

  • Human Exposures Under Control.
  • Migration of Contaminated Groundwater Under Control.
  • Final Remedy Construction.
  • Performance Standards Attained.

The map was formulated using data from EPA’s RCRAInfo system. The RCRAInfo database is a repository for information on hazardous waste handlers. For each facility represented, the map uses data fields for the four measures documenting the date they were achieved. For more information on specific cleanup facilities, please visit Hazardous Waste Cleanup Programs around the nation or Cleanups in My Community.

Please click on the desired measures and drag the slider to view changes over time.
