Mapping Data for TRI Releases

The GIS files linked to from this webpage provide mapping, display, and analysis capabilities for the Toxics Release Inventory (TRI) National Analysis data at the state, county, large aquatic ecosystem (prior to 2021), 2-digit hydrological unit code (HUC) watershed boundary (beginning in 2021), EPA region (beginning in 2021), metro/micropolitan statistical area, and facility levels.

The TRI National Analysis is EPA's annual report summarizing how certain industrial and federal facilities manage toxic chemical wastes, where toxic chemicals were released and in what quantities, and trends in the data over time.

This dataset includes information on:

  • number of TRI facilities in the geographic area and their releases (total releases, as well as releases to water, air, and land),
  •  population information, and
  • Risk Screening Environmental Indicators (RSEI) model-related pounds, toxicity-weighted pounds, and RSEI Score.

Background Information

The source of administrative boundary data for the most recent National Analysis is the 2021 cartographic boundary shapefiles. Location of facilities is provided by EPA's Facility Registry Service (FRS). Large Aquatic Ecosystems boundaries were derived from the hydrologic unit boundaries and codes for the United States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. It was revised for inclusion in the National Atlas of the United States of America (November 2002), and updated to match the streams file created by the USGS National Mapping Division (NMD) for the National Atlas of the United States of America. 2-digit HUC watershed boundaries were obtained from the United States Geological Survey.
