Navajo Workforce Development
EPA is committed to maximizing federal contract authorities to create safe jobs for Navajo workers.
EPA continues to promote jobs and business opportunities and build capacity for Navajo-owned businesses and institutions, during the assessment and clean-up of Abandoned Uranium Mines.
With the support of Navajo Nation, these opportunities will increase as cleanup work at the mines accelerates.

Superfund Job Training Initiative
The 2025 Lukachukai Mountains Mining District Superfund Job Training Initiative (SuperJTI) is an environmental remediation job readiness program that provided career development opportunities for 24 trainees living near the Lukachukai Mountains Mining District Superfund site in the Cove, Lukachukai, and Round Rock Chapters of Navajo Nation. EPA’s goal is to help communities create opportunities and partnerships related to Superfund cleanups that remain in place for the long term, and to provide the workforce development skills needed to take advantage of those opportunities.
The 2.5-week training program covered a range of topics. The 24 trainees received the following trainings and certificates; Work Readiness Training, CPR/First aid, OSHA-10, Flagging, Fall Protection, Radiation Awareness, and 40-hour HAZWOPER. EPA’s contractor Skeo will continue to stay in contact with the participants over the next 6 months to track their employment and provide support as needed. Throughout the SuperJTI process, EPA worked with their contractors under the Abandoned Mine Response and Construction Services contract to tailor the trainings to the anticipated jobs available at the Lukachukai Mountains Mining District Superfund site in the coming years.
