Source Reduction Activities by Parent Company
Facilities that report to TRI must provide information about their parent company. For TRI reporting, a parent company is the highest-level company in a facility’s ownership hierarchy as of December 31 of the reporting year. The U.S. parent company is located within the United States, while its foreign parent company is located outside the United States. Reporting year 2023 was the first year where facilities were required to report their foreign parent company name, if applicable. EPA groups facilities by parent company to analyze waste management at the parent company level and identify companies that regularly implement source reduction activities.
The figure below shows the parent companies whose facilities implemented the most source reduction activities for 2023.
Note: 1) This figure uses EPA’s standardized parent company names. 2) To view facility counts and the primary sectors reporting source reduction activities for each parent company, hover over the bar graph.
Operating Practices and Training, such as improving maintenance or scheduling and installing quality monitoring systems, were the most reported types of source reduction activities for these parent companies. Process and Equipment Modifications were also commonly reported.
Some of the facilities in these parent companies submitted additional text to describe their pollution prevention activities. Examples include:
- A ventilation and air conditioning equipment manufacturer owned by the Parker Hannafin Corporation automated part of the manufacturing process which improved the efficiency of raw material usage. [Click to view facility details in the TRI P2 Search Tool]
- A national security facility overseen by the US Department of Defense reduced the amount of lead-containing waste generated at firing ranges by changing to non-frangible munitions, after participative team management identified the opportunity to reduce lead waste.
