Electronics Case Studies

The U.S. Air Force has successfully integrated EPEAT and EnergyStar into their electronics procurement and implemented power management policies. These changes are expected to save $15 million annually and reduce power plant carbon dioxide emissions by over 100,000 tons per year.

The U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) is implementing comprehensive power management policies for the agency's computers and printers while promoting reuse of surplus devices. Desktops, laptops, and monitors are set to time out after inactivity, reducing power consumption by an estimated 8,383 BTUs per year.

Additional Case Studies

  • Electronics Case Study: Electronic Waste Recycling Increases Waste Diversion (pdf) (572.71 KB, February 2014, EPA-905-F-14-001)
The U.S. Railroad Retirement Board headquarters in Chicago recycled more than 3,200 pounds of electronic waste in one year, a nearly 10 percent increase over its baseline the previous year. This was accomplished by finding additional recycling or repurposing options for the agency’s equipment through the property management process and the Computers for Learning program.
