FGC Webinar: Utility Green Tariff Programs in the U.S.

Overview and Opportunities for Cost Savings

Federal agencies may want to procure renewable energy from an off-site generator. Green tariffs allow large utility customers in traditionally regulated states to procure renewable energy from their utility through a special tariff for energy from a specific renewable energy project, typically through a long-term contract. Some of these green tariffs provide customers with cost savings. The webinar will explain how these tariffs are structured, how to evaluate cost savings potential and what agencies need to consider when examining this purchasing option.

Featured Speakers

  • Jenny Heeter is a senior energy analyst at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) in Golden, Colorado. She focuses her research on markets and policies to support mid-scale solar deployment, corporate purchases of renewable energy, and community solar projects. In her prior position at the Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor, the ratepayer advocate in Indiana, she filed testimony on cases related to utility green pricing programs as well as energy efficiency proposals. She holds an M.P.A. in environmental policy from Indiana University-Bloomington’s School of Public and Environmental Affairs and a B.A. in environmental studies and political science from Macalester College.
  • Christopher Kent of EPA’s Green Power Partnership program will discuss EPA’s voluntary program that recognizes organizational use of green power. Chris has been part of EPA’s Renewable Energy team for the past 4 years, and prior to this developed efficiency specifications for office and commercial equipment for EPA’s ENERGY STAR program.
