RSEI Data Dictionary: Geographic Microdata Shapefiles for Other Geographies

The following tables provide descriptions for each field in each table. Note that for the Geographic Microdata, "Other Geographies" includes block groups, census tracts, and ZIP code files.  For more information, see the RSEI methodology document and the RSEI Microdata documentation.

Tables in the RSEI Data Dictionary
Facility Chemical Disaggregated Grid Cell Geographic Microdata Aggregated Grid Cell Geographic Microdata for States
Off-site MCL Aggregated Grid Cell Geographic Microdata Water Geographic Microdata
Submissions Releases Disaggregated Geographic Microdata for Other Geographies Grid Shapefiles
Elements Media Aggregated Geographic Microdata for Other Geographies Census Crosswalks
NAICS Category Geographic Microdata Shapefiles for Other Geographies Population Data

Geographic Microdata shapefiles files include the same data as the disaggregated files, but the chemical releases are summed over each geographic unit (block group, census tract or ZIP code) and the data are presented in a shapefile format for use with GIS programs. Because the values are summed, unweighted concentrations are not available (the sum of the concentrations of different chemicals would be meaningless). These files contain the same data as the aggregated Geographic Microdata for other geographies. For user convenience a comma delimited text file is also included in each zip file; that text file is the same as the text file for the aggregated Microdata.

Naming: The zipped files are named as follows, where XXXX is the reporting year for the data freeze, and YYYY is the year of the data contained in the file .

  • Block group: censusmicroblockgroupXXX_YYYY_aggregated.zip
  • Census tract: censusmicrotractsXXX_YYYY_aggregated.zip
  • ZIP codes: censusmicrozipcodeXXX_YYYY_aggregated.zip

Users should note that Geographic Microdata file structures and fields have changed for version 2.3.12. Documentation for previous versions can be found on the Geographic Microdata documentation web page.

Geographic Microdata Shapefiles for Other Geographies

Field Number Name Description
1 GEOID Census identifier (block group or census tract) or ZIP code (updated for version 2.3.12 as text field with leading zeroes where appropriate).
2 NUMFACS Number of facilities with releases affecting geographic unit.
3 P_NUMFACS Percentile associated with field NUMFACS.
4 NUMRELEASES Number of individual releases affecting geographic unit.
5 P_NUMRELEASES Percentile associated with field NUMRELEASES.
6 NUMCHEMS Number of chemicals with nonzero concentrations for geographic unit.
7 P_NUMCHEMS Percentile associated with field NUMCHEMS.
8 TOXCONC Concentration multiplied by inhalation toxicity weight, summed over all chemicals impacting geographic unit.
9 P_TOXCONC Percentile associated with field TOXCONC.
10 SCORE Risk-related score (surrogate dose * toxicity weight * population), summed over all chemicals impacting geographic unit.
11 P_SCORE Percentile associated with field SCORE.
12 POP Population of geographic unit.
13 P_POP Percentile associated with field POP.
14 CTOXCONC Average aggregated toxicity-weighted concentration of the cells in the geographic unit, using only inhalation toxicity weight for cancer effects.
15 P_CTOXCONC Percentile associated with field CSCORE.
16 NCTOXCONC Average aggregated toxicity-weighted concentration of the cells in the geographic unit, using only inhalation toxicity weight for noncancer effects.
17 P_NCTOXCONC Percentile associated with field NCSCORE.
