Centreville and adjacent communities in the East St. Louis area have experienced chronic sanitary sewer overflow (SSO) issues in residential areas for many years.  SSOs can be caused by aging infrastructure, poor maintenance, lack of funding, treatment capacity issues, and/or poor sewage control. The area includes several communities with multiple, interconnected sewer systems (including the cities of East St. Louis, Centreville, the Villages of Cahokia, Alorton and Sauget, and the Commonfields of Cahokia Sewage District (Commonfields), and the Granite City and American Bottoms municipal wastewater treatment plants that treat flows from the customer communities.

EPA is investigating to understand the scope and extent of the issues in this area. The EPA inspection reports are listed below. EPA also issued Section 308 information requests and links to those Information Requests are included below. EPA’s future public investigatory documents will be released here.
