The WaterSense Label

The label banner

What the Label Means

The WaterSense logo

WaterSense labeled products meet EPA's specifications for water efficiency and performance, and are backed by independent, third-party certification.

Certifying organizations help maintain the WaterSense label’s integrity and credibility by verifying and testing products for conformance to WaterSense specifications, efficiency, performance, and label use, and also conduct periodic market surveillance.

Products bearing the WaterSense label:

  • Perform as well or better than their less efficient counterparts.
  • Are 20 percent more water efficient than average products in that category.
  • Realize water savings on a national level.
  • Provide measurable water savings results.
  • Achieve water efficiency through several technology options.

Use the WaterSense Product Search Tool to find WaterSense labeled products featuring a wide variety of price points and a broad range of styles.

Product Performance Matters

Equal or superior product performance is a vital component of the WaterSense label. If end users are satisfied with the performance of WaterSense labeled products, they are less likely to replace them with less efficient models and are more likely to pursue other water-efficient products in the future. The How are WaterSense Specifications Developed? page describes how EPA ensures that WaterSense labeled products deliver on performance.

Not Just a Product Label

The WaterSense label can also make it easy to identify homes that save both water and energy. WaterSense labeled homes are independently certified to include WaterSense labeled plumbing products (e.g., toilets, showerheads, lavatory faucets), be free of wasteful water leaks, and incorporate features to make it at least 30 percent more water-efficient than typical new construction. The WaterSense label is an important part of a whole-house solution to save water, energy, and money while ensuring customer satisfaction.

WaterSense also labels certification programs for landscape irrigation professionals that advance water-efficient irrigation techniques and practices. Labeled programs must meet EPA's criteria for rigorous testing and certification processes. EPA subsequently promotes professionals certified by a WaterSense labeled program.
